The REEP Awards scheme aims to help you develop cross-curricular thinking,
based on RE and developed through information technology, whilst enhancing
your environment.
The design of a garden for communal use is a rewarding activity but it needs
some planning. A bit of time thinking about the following questions will
pay dividends:
Who is going to be involved? e.g.
- Gather together your team and work out who will be doing what.
- Decide whether/how you will be involving people outside the school
community
- Make connections between the team who will produce the garden design
and those who will help with the information technology for the entry.
Are they the same people?
What
resources do we have? e.g.
- Make an audit of all the resources you can think of, e.g. time, person-power,
money, contacts, existing garden tools and plants
How much do you
have? How easy are they to gather together?
- Who is good at what? How can we best use them?
What resources can we raise? e.g.
- As a result of your resources audit, consider what is missing and where
you might find it. What about sponsorship from local businesses or grants?
What about a fund-raising event?
- How can different departments in the school work together to help one
another?
What permissions do we need? e.g.
- Decide a structure for any necessary consultations, e.g. with governors,
school caretakers, groundsmen etc
- Check health and safety regulations for the area you are hoping to build
What are our other advantages and constraints? e.g.
- Is there anything else that is particularly important for your school?
Are there particular geographical, climatic or other considerations?
- What size is the space available? How will it affect what you plan?
How are we going to organise our time? e.g.
- Make a realistic assessment of who is available to do what and when
- Make a timetable and a chart listing people's promised involvement, and
make sure everyone involved has a copy.
- Check regularly that the planning is still on course and revise if necessary
Where can we find inspiration? e.g.
- Look around you, at what other people have done locally
- Check the website, especially the virtual gardens and the gardening hints
- Check out gardening books and programmes. Some are suggested in the Virtual
Gardens.
Where can we find practical help? e.g.
- You could also ask locally, e.g. gardening enthusiasts, or garden centres.
- For practical help in submitting your entry, contact gardenawards@reep.org
What advantage will this be to our academic work? e.g.
- The curriculum links section of the website gives the headings of important
areas of the curriculum covered by the Awards activity. Creating a school
garden is also a way of developing the social, moral and cultural life of
the school.
How will we submit our entry? e.g.
- Look on the Online Registration section of the website
What will happen if we win? e.g.
- You will be notified shortly after the judging and representatives of
the school will be invited to attend the Awards Ceremony at a National Trust
property in late June or early July. You will then be given the Award to
start building your garden. The winner of the ACE Award for an artist working
with a school will be asked to a prizegiving in London in November, by which
time work should have started on the artist's commission.
GOOD LUCK!
