Herbs
Herbs can add an aromatic touch to a garden.
Herbs for a Garden in a Term
Herbs can be grown from seed, but they can also be ordered as small plants. Nurseries and gardens centres propagate seeds during the winter and early spring so that small plants are ready for sale during mid-spring, often in April. Buying herbs as small plants can save time and space, allowing more space on window sills or in greenhouses to germinate other plants from seed that may not be as commonly available as many herbs.
Easy to grow herbs include basil, French tarragon, parsley, chives, sage and chervil.
When the threat of frost has passed, herbs can be planted directly in the garden or in pots. Most herbs require a well-drained soil in full sun. Horticultural grit can be added to garden soils to increase drainage. Planting herbs in pots means that soil moisture and drainage can more precisely controlled. Pots of herbs can also be used to decorate sunny areas without planting beds, such as terraces, patio, balconies or roof gardens.
