Sprouting Seeds

Sprouting seeds grow quickly and require little space.

Sprouting Seeds for a Garden in a Term

Garden cress sprouting If space and time are lacking, or simply for a quick exercise, try sprouting seeds that germinate and can be harvested in just 2-7 days. Many garden centres, catalogues and even grocery shops stock seeds in clear trays, about the size of a cake or shoe box, that provide the humid atmosphere in which to germinate seeds to be eaten as sprouts. These seeds include white mustard, mung beans, lentils, broccoli, beets, basil, alfalfa and cress.

Idea for Discussion

Have a ‘sprout tasting’ in class and note the different shapes, colours and flavours of each sprout.
