Dottie And Buzz

Dottie and Buzz

RE is always a difficult subject to teach in the earliest years. For 4-6 years olds, whether in nursery, reception classes or Year 1/2, the emphasis in both RE and Science tends to lie in the areas of 'respect for all living things', 'experiencing the natural world' and 'creation'. Surely this says something about the basic connection between RE and the environment!

DOTTIE AND BUZZ, a recent publication from Channel 4 and Culham, deals directly with this interconnection. The five 10 minute television programmes introduce two engaging young friends, Dottie Polka and Buzz Bumble, child-size puppets whose adventures will encourage young children to think about some of life's deeper issues.

Sequences include an encounter with Dottie's adopted bat, a day at the seaside thinking about what is on the other side of the world, in the sky or under the sea, and wondering at the school Creation Table. There is plenty of backup material to help start discussions and activity related to RE and the environment.
