Here
you might find Mr Loads - or you might not! Since he has retired,
he spends most of the time at his allotment. It's the centre of his
life. It helps him get out of the house - and out from under his wife's
feet!
In the Book of Genesis, one consequence of Adam being thrown out of
the Garden of Eden was that he was forced to start gardening for himself
Here is Holbein's vivid woodcut of Adam desperately toiling to grow
food for his wife and family.

"Cursed is the ground because of you: though painful toil
you will eat of it all the days of your life
By the sweat
of your brow you will eat foot until you return to the ground,
since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you
will return." (Genesis 3:17-19)
Mr
Loads doesn't see his allotment as a punishment at all. For him,
digging keeps him fit and helps him produce lots of delicious fresh
food. Why not consider acquiring an allotment yourself? All over
the country allotments are closing because of lack of use, or pressure
to use the land for other things. The Bible says that Adam was made
from the earth - that we are part of God's wider created order.
Digging the earth helps remind us of our essential connections.
And if you can't face all that time and toil? Well, Christmas is
a time to buy seeds ready for next year. Why not buy a packed of
basil, rocket, parsley
you can always grow them in a plant
pot on your window ledge.
TIP!
When buying Christmas presents and food, remember the agricultural
workers in other countries. The Fair Trade movement aims to protect
and encourage small-holders in the developing world, especially
those under threat from larger agri-businesses. For more information,
