Mr
Postlethwaite lives here. He has just left college, where he did an
HND in agriculture. So why is he living in the middle of town? Because
his first job is as a groundsman in the local park.
The park was given to the council by a local worthy years ago,
when the houses were being built. The hedges have gone, but at least
it's green! As well as football pitches and flower beds, there is
also a small 'urban farm' with a few sheep and pigs. So Mr Postlethwaite
has to tend the potted plants and use his animal husbandry skills.
Beyond Bethlehem Street, British agriculture is currently reeling
from one disaster to another. There are dire warnings that we are
seeing the end of a 'traditional' British way of life, with a countryside
that is nothing more than a site for golf courses and tourist attractions.
But were things really better in the past?
