The Caerleon Labyrinth

There are six known Labyrinth mosaic pavements in Britian that have survived from the Roman era. Three of them are identical – they have a three coil meander pattern. The images shown here are of one of these and are of the pavement found at Caerleon, south-east Wales. Only about half the floor survives.

The other two of this kind were found in east Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire. The centre of the Caerleon labyrinth is missing, but the Nottinghamshire mosaic (which was uncovered in 1870 and then reburied) included fragments of a figure in the centre, with a sword – presumably this was Theseus.
