Grey's Court

The Greys Court maze has its origin is a sermon Dr Robert Runcie gave on the occasion of his enthronement as Archbishop of Canterbury on the 25th of March 1980. He described how he longed that all people, both within the church and without it, should help each other solve the secret of the maze of life.

In the Greys Court labyrinth/maze there are choices at the cruciform junctions. The entire maze can be walked by crossing straight over each of the diamond shaped thorns – the Path of Life – though other choices are also possible.
The maze is contains complex number symbolism. The seven rings of paths represent the seven days of creation. The diamond of the centre is 9 times the span between each part and represents the 9th hour of agony. The two arms of the Byzantine Cross total 33 feet – the age of Christ’ at his death… and so on!
