Welcome to this year’s Advent Calendar from Culham and REEP.

Mazes and Labyrinths.

Details from various mazes

The idea of life as a journey is found in many religious traditions. Labyrinths and mazes can both be used to develop this metaphor – but each suggests a different way of imaging the underlying pattern of life.

A journey is central to the Christmas Story (see The Three Kings in last year’s calendar). The shepherds, too, made their pilgrimage to the stable in Bethlehem. And each year, in their imagination, Christians continue to make this journey into the presence of the new born Jesus. Labyrinths and mazes, with their range of symbolic possibilities, develop this theme in our Advent Calendar.

Labyrinths and mazes also make attractive features in school gardens and playgrounds. We hope that this year’s calendar will inspire some of you to create such a feature in your school grounds. As well as historical background material, we are providing some models and practical suggestions for such a project.
