St Nicholas - Advent 2007

Once upon a time, long ago, there was a young man called Nicholas. He was good and kind – in particular he was generous. Nicholas was a Christian and because he was such a good man and respected by many people he was made a bishop. Later, people called him a saint – Saint Nicholas.

About St Nicholas - Day 20

In Matthew 9:21 Jesus told a rich young man, ‘If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.’ Nicholas tried to do this in his life.

This is a prayer of the Church of England for St Nicholas Day:

Almighty Father, lover of souls,
who chose your servant Nicholas
to be a bishop in the Church,
that he might give freely out of the treasures of your grace:
make us mindful of the needs of others
and, as we have received, so teach us also to give;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.

At Christmas, Christians celebrate the generosity of God. Christians are called to reflect God’s generosity in their lives. And doing that also helps them have a Happy Christmas!
