THE LAST SUPPER
BREAD AND WINE
Jesus had a final meal with his disciples. During the meal he took bread and wine and shared them with his disciples. Christians continue to share bread and wine as part of their worship in church.
LAMB
Jesus’ last meal was probably a Passover meal – the meal which Jewish people share together to celebrate the time when God delivered Moses and the people from slavery in Egypt. Lamb is an important part of this meal.
JOHN
The disciple shown sitting beside Jesus is often identified as John. In John’s Gospel it says: ‘One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him’ (John 13:23 – but this is not the same John who wrote the Gospel). Later, when Jesus was arrested, John would run away with the other disciples!
JUDAS
Judas made a deal with the Chief Priests to hand Jesus over for 30 silver coins. Jesus knew he would be betrayed by one of his disciples and said so at this last meal. All the disciples looked at each other and asked ‘Is it me?’
DRAGON
There are no dragons in the Bible’s description of this event, but sometimes they are painted as a symbol of the devil who ‘had already prompted Judas Iscariot … to betray Jesus’ (John 13:2).
