PRIMARY RESOURCES:
ACTIVITY 5 - ALANNA AND THE TREE
THE FREVO
- A form of the Brazilian dance,
the Samba
- Comes from Recife (‘heyseefey’),
North East Brazil
- Involves fast and vigorous kicks,
twists and deep knee bends, rather like a Russian Cossack dance.
- Dancers manipulate small
umbrellas or parasols as they dance through the crowded streets, squares and over
bridges
- You need to be very athletic
to perform it!
The Frevo is performed during
Carnaval (carnival) - a loud, lively and colourful street festival lasting at
least four days.
Carnaval originated as a way
of having at least one party eating, drinking, dancing, making music and having
fun on Shrove Tuesday.
Shrove Tuesday is the day before
Lent, the Christian period of fasting which precedes Easter.
Brazilian carnival is famous
throughout the world. Preparing for it, by making costumes and practising dances,
is one of the most important activities for Brazilians in their spare time throughout
the year!
