ACTIVITY 4 - PILGRIMAGE: TRAVEL - AN ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUE?

Atmospheric pollution, urban squalor, rural destruction, noise, cultural corruption... so many contemporary problems can be related to modern travel. Modern travel technology promises freedom, but so often ends by delivering bondage - think of all those traffic jams and airport delays!

Religion, too, has an interest in the concept of travel. Pilgrimage is a feature of many world religions. So is the idea of an inner, spiritual journey.

NOTE FOR TEACHERS

Many environmental problems are not simply technological but are rooted in humankind's self-understanding; environmental politics and religion inevitably overlap. The activities in this resource are designed to introduce some of the environmental problems that arise from modern travel technology and to use ideas from the world's religions to reflect on them.

The suggested activities could be adapted for use with both Junior and Secondary school pupils. The ideas can easily be adapted to suit individual needs... sections can be edited out or units extended over several lessons. More information about pilgrimage can be found on the excellent website - Pilgrim's Progress: www.pilgrimsprogress.org.uk
Another useful website, although only partially complete, is - Pilgrim Net: home6.inet.tele.dk/pilgrim/.

ICT ELEMENTS

These units have been designed primarily for teachers as a downloadable resource. But older students could use parts of the second and third sections for source material.

Activity 1: Pupils could download the worksheets for themselves. At the end, they could collate their answers.
Research on pilgrimages could be done using CD ROMs, e.g. Granada's Exploring World Faiths, or, by older and more able students, on the internet.
