This interactive quiz can be used by students on their own or in small groups. It is suitable for Key Stage Three but older students may find it a good discussion starter.

It aims to underline the ideas that
  I. Our choices have consequences that affect others and ourselves.
  II. Not all lifestyles are sustainable

The following activities could be used as introduction or development
  I. A debate on what we value about the world around us - in the immediate locality, further afield, nationally and locally.
  I. Research about the fate of Easter Island - a 'hard case' of unsustainable, if primitive, development.
  I. Research on faith teachings about the environment, creation and responsibility, perhaps arranged as a resource bank for the school intranet or web site. Try www.theresite.org for links to faith community websites.
  I. Prepare a collective worship based on any of the above activities for the rest of the school.

Buddhism - Five Moral precepts (especially not taking what is not given)

Islam - Akhlaq - ethics, activities and beliefs in social life
Judaism - judgement, forgiveness, gratitude
Sikh Dharam - attitudes to contemporary life
Christianity - Christian ways of life
  I. Learning experiences - All Faiths: Suggested activities
People: Listen to people talking about beliefs/values
Study moral teachings. Activity about environmental problems

Key Stage 4
  I. Key Teachings and Focus:
Buddhism - Nirvana: implications for contemporary issues; working towards enlightenment
Hindu Dharma - Communities and Traditions: self-discipline
Islam - Ibadah: political, social and economic aspects; Akhlaq: contemporary issues
Judaism - Torah / Rabbinic principles in contemporary issues
Sikh Dharam - Practices: Sikh attitude to the environment
Christianity - Jesus' teaching on judgement; use of Bible as basis fo theology or personal action
  I. Suggested activities
Wider World: experience and reflect on natural world / science and religion
Ethics: listen to activist members of faith communities talking about environmental dilemmas.

  A. About way in which living things and the environment can be protected and the importance of sustainable development.

Key Stage 4
  A. How the impact of humans on the environment depends on social and economic factors; including population size, industrial processes and waste.
