Secondary Science Syllabus

This section outlines the relevant areas of the Science Syllabus.

There are several areas of the Science syllabus that can be enriched using materials on RE and the Environment.

For example, an awareness of ethical and religious issues underlines teaching about:

  • the need to treat animals with care
  • the implications of sustainable development
  • the inter-connectedness of life forms

KEY STAGE 3

LIVING THINGS AND THEIR ENVIRONMENT

Pupils should be taught:

  • about ways in which living things and the environment can be protected and the importance of sustainable development
  • that habitats support a diversity of plants and animals that are interdependent
  • how some organisms are adapted to survive daily and seasonal changes in their habitats
  • how predation and competition for resources affects the size of populations
  • about food webs composed of several food chains and how food chains can be quantified using pyramids of numbers
  • how toxic materials can accumulate in food chains

KEY STAGE 4:

(Single/Double adds a few technical points e.g. about energy transfer in systems)

LIVING THINGS AND THEIR ENVIRONMENT

Pupils should be taught:

  • how the distribution and relative abundance of organisms in habitats can be explained using ideas of interdependence, adaptation, competition and predation
  • how the impact of humans on the environment depends on social and economic factors, including population size, industrial processes and waste
  • about the impact of sustainable development
