 JONAH

Jonah's story is popular for illustration as a children's book.

- How many versions can you find?
- Which aspect of the story do they focus on?
- Compare the different styles. Which are best?

For Younger Pupils

Plan and execute your own illustration of Jonah descending under the water.

- Use any media - collage, paints, monoprint - to get the right effect.
- Write a text to go with the illustration e.g. the thoughts and emotions of Jonah as he sinks past the various strange creatures.

For Older Pupils

The Jonah story has also been illustrated by more 'serious' artists, e.g. the woodcuts by David Jones (see illustration). More sophisticated treatments by Christian artists may bring out the Jonah/Christ parallel. Discuss this parallel (Jesus 'descending into hell' for three days, Jonah in the belly of the whale).

Students could create a stained glass window for a church using the Jonah/Christ equation and celebrating the sea.
