THE EFFECTS OF DRINKING FOUL WATER

In Britain we can drink clean water from the tap and sewage treatment is - compared with the past - much improved. Most of our water / sewerage systems date back to 19th century campaigns to clean up Britain's dirty cities. Most towns and cities organised their own system. Later they were unified and nationalised, but now, once again, the various parts have been privatised.

Most water businesses have their own website. Check out your own region e.g. Thames Water www.skillsware.net/thames offers information and educational activities, including a downloadable 'Network Challenge' interactive game with teacher notes 'as featured in the Millennium Dome'. The players have to construct a water distribution system - and have to deal with various problems including cost and 'customer relations'.
 WATER AID

Water Aid is Britain's leading water development charity. Its website http://www.wateraid.org.uk/index.html explores many issues about water supply internationally.

Highlights here and in their education section include:
Information about how many children, especially girls, have to carry water home over very long distances. A technology game for younger children involves creating a bag to carry a large lemonade bottle filled with water (using limited materials) and carrying it home without using their body to support the bottle weight.

An interactive on-line game for young children showing how water projects are initiated and managed in developing countries.

On-line issue sheets for older students on a wide variety of topics, e.g. Health & Sanitation, Women and the Family, Water & Human Rights, Water & Poverty, Dams, Water & Leisure, 'Water & the Environment' and 'Water & Conservation in the UK'.
Designed for 16-18 year olds, but could also be used with younger secondary pupils - and invaluable for teachers who want a quick overview of the topic!
